How do you know which shower chair to get?
1. Choose based on your environment
- If you have a walk-in shower
Use a stool or a shower chair. If others use the shower, choose one that is light and can easily be removed. Shower chair with wheels are perfect for roll-in showers and for toileting. - If you have a bathtub
Use a stool, shower chair, or transfer bench. Measure the inside width of the tub. Make sure the outside width dimensions of the legs fit inside. For a transfer bench, make sure the height of the bench will actually slide over the top of the tub.
2. Choose based on mobility and support
- A stool provides the least amount of support. Make sure you are mobile and can support yourself well sitting down if you want to use a stool.
- A shower chair with a backrest is for those with moderate balance and mobility. This is good for those recovering post surgery. it is a low-risk fall solution.
- A transfer bench is for those with a high-risk fall condition and with restricted mobility and balance. See our sliding shower chairs and non-sliding shower transfer benches if you cannot step into the tub or shower yourself.
- Tilt & recline shower chairs have backs and seats that tilt together to provide more support for those with weaker legs and/or weaker upper body. These tilt and recline shower chairs allow patients to sit safely in a tilted position, allowing them to feel more secure about their body position and safety.
3. Choose based on weight capacity
Standard shower chairs have a weight capacity from 250-400 lbs. Many also have bariatric models to support heavier weights with a reinforced, wider frame and larger seat.
4. Choose a standard or specialty model
Shower chairs with a rotating, such as a rotating seat, or sliding feature, such as a transfer bench, make for easier transfer and reduce friction and shearing injuries.

Transfer benches were designed for those who cannot step into the tub or shower. They straddle the tub wall and provide a place to sit outside the tub area. From there, the user either pushes themself across the bench into the tub area, or if it's a sliding shower chair, just slides in on the chair. Shower chairs, on the other hand, allow you to stay seated while bathing but they cannot help you get in and out of the tub.What features are important when choosing a shower chair?
