All of the transport wheelchairs, also known as travel or companion chairs, fold for storage and transportation and include removable, swing-away footrests. Transport wheelchairs are designed to be pushed by someone from behind the chair (attendant operated). They are advantageous to a manual, or standard, wheelchair in that they can weigh up to 25 pounds lighter, making it easier for picking up and transportation. Additional features may include chairs that offer multiple seat widths, fixed arm or removable arms, frame color, wheel size and with or without hand brakes. Removable, or detachable, armrests allow for easier side transfers on and off the chair. The larger 12" rear wheels on some models allow for a more stable ride over rougher surfaces. These same transport chairs will also have attendant operated hand brakes on the push handles so the attendant has more control of the speed of the chair. Heavy duty transport wheelchairs have wider seat widths and are built with a reinforced frame and dual crossbraces to support weight capacities over 300 lbs.
