If you're looking for heavy-duty power (self-propelled) wheelchairs for bariatric individuals, see our electric heavy-duty wheelchair by Golden with a weight capacity of up to 450 lbs.
What makes bariatric wheelchairs different?
- Heavier Weight Capacity
Bariatric wheelchairs (also called heavy-duty wheelchairs) have reinforced frames for a heavier weight capacity than standard wheelchairs, providing extra support and stability for larger individuals weighing from 350 to 1000 lbs. - Wider Seats
They also have broader seats to provide ample space and more comfort for larger individuals. - More Durable
Since bariatric wheelchairs are made for heavier individuals, this also makes them more durable. - Reinforced Tires
They also feature reinforced tires to ensure a smooth and safe ride.
Most of the heavy-duty wheelchairs we sell here:
- Fold for storage and transportation;
- Include removable, swing-away footrests;
- Include multiple seat sizes, armrest styles, frame colors and wheel options depending on the model.
Bariatric Wheelchair FAQs
What's the difference between a bariatric wheelchair and a heavy duty wheelchair?
The simple answer is nothing. Both bariatric and heavy-duty are terms used to refer to wheelchairs that have been engineered to support larger individuals up to 700 lbs. They not only support the weight, they are also wider to give more room to the individual.
Will a bariatric wheelchair fit through a normal door?
It depends on the weight capacity and seat width you need. Our Invacare Tracer Bariatric Wheelchair, for example, comes in different widths, supports up to 450 lbs and can fit through a normal door. There are more. Use the filters on the left to first select the weight capacity you need, then the seat width. Then open each product option and click the Specifications tab to see the overall width.
How wide of a wheelchair does an obese person need?
That depends on how wide they are when sitting down. Bariatric wheelchairs have many different seat widths to choose from. The overall width of these wheelchairs we carry here ranges from 16"-30".
