Hospital Bed Mattress Toppers & Overlays
Alternating pressure overlay & gel foam toppers and overlays lay on top of a mattress to help prevent bed sores
Level 2 & 3*
Why choose a mattress overlay or topper instead of a foam or hospital bed air mattress?
Alternating pressure pads and foam or gel mattress toppers (aka overlays) are a less costly alternative to mattress replacement systems and attach to an existing hospital style bed mattress.
All these toppers are recommended for the elderly, infirm and handicapped, especially for those who spend a good time in bed but can't afford the more expensive air and foam mattress options.
Alternating Pressure Pad Systems
The alternating pressure pad systems are designed to aid in the prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers (also called bed sores) by alternately inflating and deflating air cells in the mattress overlay or pad in a regular cyclical pattern. This offers pressure relief and improved air circulation, allowing air to reach the skin and preventing sweat build up.
Low Air Loss Design
Some overlays also include a "low air loss" design which helps prevent and treat existing pressure ulcers. A low air loss mattress is essentially an air mattress covered with tiny holes. These holes are designed to let out air very slowly which helps keep the skin dry and wicks away any moisture, thus maintaining an aerated, dry sleeping surface to prevent skin moisture build up between the body and mattress.
These overlays are for those at a greater risk of developing bed sores or already have them.
Gel Overlays
Gel overlays are best for patients who have a lower risk for developing pressure ulcers, or those who have only superficial bedsores.
