Non-Sliding Shower Transfer Benches
Non-sliding shower benches are for individuals who can slide themselves across a fixed bench.
What are shower transfer benches?
Transfer benches extend beyond the edge of the bath tub (or outside of the shower) and assist those who cannot step into the tub or shower. Unlike sliding transfer benches, these are for those who are able to scoot themselves across the bench to position themselves in the tub or shower.
What should I look for in a transfer bench?
- Size: Look at these measurements:
- Seat height
- Weight capacity
- Bench length and the amount the bench extends out into the bathroom area beyond the tub wall or shower.
- Durability: Remember, it's going to get wet in the shower or bath. So you don't want a transfer bench and chair that will rust and corrode. Neither aluminum or plastic will do that, but aluminum provides more support that plastic.
- Features:
- Cut-out seats for personal washing
- Padded seats
- Ability to reverse direction to meet the needs of your bathroom's layout
- Perforated seats to allow water to drain
- Accommodates the shower curtain to keep your bathroom floor dry
How do you use a transfer bench?
The bench itself extends beyond the edge of the bath tub (or outside of the shower). The patient sits on the bench then scoots into the shower or tub. Non-sliding transfer benches do not require an attendant to assist the patient.
Does Medicare cover the cost of a sliding transfer bench?
No, unfortunately, Medicare does not cover shower chairs because they're not considered medically necessary.
