The Invacare 9805P is a 450 lb. hydraulic patient lift built around two things Invacare takes seriously: caregiver safety and long-term reliability. Low-friction casters make it easier to roll than standard caster designs — a detail Invacare specifically calls out as a contribution to caregiver safety. The frame is backed by a 3-year warranty and Invacare states a 5-year expected service life when used daily per instructions. Optional locking 5” rear casters can be added at checkout if your care setting requires them. If you’re comparing manual patient lifts, see the full manual Hoyer lift lineup

About Invacare

Invacare has been manufacturing home and long-term care medical equipment for over 40 years, with a product line spanning patient lifts, power wheelchairs, manual wheelchairs, and respiratory equipment. Their patient lifts are used in both home care and clinical settings across the country, and the 9805P reflects Invacare’s institutional design philosophy: build for daily use, back it with meaningful warranty coverage, and engineer the details that protect caregivers as much as patients. The 3-year frame warranty and 5-year stated service life are expressions of that commitment.

Why We Like This Lift

We carry the Invacare 9805P because the combination of a 3-year frame warranty and a 5-year expected service life tells you something about how it was built. Invacare designed this lift for institutional daily use and made it available for home care — the low-friction casters, the offset mast and boom, the elongated handle for different operator heights are all details that reflect that origin. At 68 lbs. it’s also easy for one caregiver to move between rooms. The optional locking casters at checkout are a practical add-on for care settings where that’s needed. If you want the same Invacare quality in an electric lift, see the Invacare Reliant RPL450-1.

Best for…

  • Patients up to 450 lbs. who require full-body lift support for daily transfers
  • Caregivers who want the strongest warranty in the 450 lb. manual lift category — 3 years on the frame
  • Long-term home care where equipment longevity matters — 5-year expected service life stated by Invacare
  • Single-caregiver situations where a lighter, easier-to-roll lift reduces physical effort — 68 lbs., low-friction casters
  • Care settings where locking casters may be needed — available as an optional upgrade at checkout
  • Medicare-eligible patients — manual hydraulic lifts are covered by Medicare Part B when criteria are met

Feature Highlights

3-Year Frame Warranty and 5-Year Service Life — Invacare Backs the Build

The 9805P carries Invacare’s 3-year warranty on the lift frame — the longest frame warranty in the 450 lb. manual lift category in this lineup — and a 1-year warranty on the hydraulic pump. Invacare also states an expected service life of 5 years when the lift is used daily and maintained per the owner’s manual. For a lift that will be used multiple times every day, that stated longevity is a meaningful assurance of value over time. The hydraulic pump is sealed at the factory; do not attempt to open it.

Low-Friction Casters — Easier to Roll, Safer for Caregivers

The 9805P’s low-friction casters are specifically noted by Invacare as improving rollability and contributing to caregiver safety. Rolling a 68 lb. lift carrying a patient requires meaningful physical effort — particularly when maneuvering in tight spaces or around furniture. Reducing that rolling resistance over the course of a care day adds up. The standard model ships with 5” swivel casters front and rear; optional locking 5” rear casters (part #1110421) can be added at checkout for an additional $75 if your care setting requires them.

Offset Mast and Boom — Better Lift Path, Full Travel Range

The 9805P uses an offset mast and boom design that Invacare describes as providing a better patient lift path and maximizing the full travel range. The elongated pump handle is designed to serve a broad range of operator heights and offers improved handling ability. The pump handle also rotates side to side so the caregiver can work from the most comfortable pumping angle. To raise: close the control valve (turn clockwise toward the pump handle) and pump. To lower: open the control valve (counterclockwise). A built-in safety gate inside the hydraulic system maintains a controlled rate of descent regardless of how far the valve is opened.

17” to 61” Boom Height — Floor to Elevated Surfaces

The boom height at the sling attachment point adjusts from 17” to 61” from the floor — low enough for floor-level transfers at the bottom of that range, and high enough to clear most elevated beds and surfaces at the top. The owner’s manual confirms floor transfer capability and includes the procedure. Confirm the floor transfer approach with the patient’s physician or physical therapist before first use.

Easy Disassembly for Storage or Transport

The mast separates from the base for easy storage or transport — useful for caregivers who need to move the lift between locations or store it when not in use. Each time the mast is removed and returned, it must be locked into the socket of the base assembly before use.

Hydraulic Full Body Lifts — Introduction by Invacare

Summary of what this video covers:

  • Practice before lifting a resident. Become proficient with bed-to-wheelchair, chair-to-bed, and floor-to-bed transfers before working with a real patient. Always read and understand the owner’s manual.
  • Safety starts with body mechanics. Keep a low center of gravity, maintain a wide base of support, keep your spine aligned, lift with your legs, and never twist while lifting.
  • Inspect slings before every use. Check for tears, fraying, loose stitching, cuts, bleaching, or other damage. Any compromised sling should be removed from service immediately.
  • Full-body lifts assist non-ambulatory or bariatric residents. Invacare hydraulic lifts can safely transfer individuals up to 450 lbs. from beds, wheelchairs, commodes, stretchers, or the floor.
  • The lift has three main assemblies: the base, the mast, and the boom. Understanding each helps caregivers operate safely.
  • The adjustable base improves maneuverability and stability. Legs must always be fully opened and locked before lifting a resident for maximum stability and proper weight distribution.
  • The hydraulic system raises and lowers the boom. Close the control valve and pump the handle to raise. Open the valve to lower. A built-in safety mechanism limits maximum descent speed.
  • Residents should ideally have individually assigned slings. Sling selection depends on size, weight, medical condition, and transfer needs. Available styles include full-body, commode-opening, divided-leg, and toileting slings.
  • Color-coded loops adjust patient positioning. Reclining position: attach using loops at the end of all four straps. Seated position: use loops closest to the resident for the head, loops furthest away for the legs.
  • Two caregivers are recommended for all transfers. While one caregiver can operate this lift, Invacare recommends two for all resident transfers. Always communicate with the resident throughout the process.

Practice transfers often so that you become proficient at the task before you try to lift a resident. Practice lifts from bed to wheelchair or chair, from chair to bed, and floor to bed. Read and understand the owner/operator’s manual.

Safety is most important when performing lifts — and that includes your safety. Always use good body mechanics. Keep your center of gravity low and use your leg muscles. Separate your legs to establish a broad base of support. Keep your spine in natural alignment and never twist while lifting.

Always inspect the resident’s sling before using it. Check for wear, tears, and loose stitching. Bleached, torn, cut, frayed, or broken slings are unsafe and should not be used.

Invacare’s full-body lifts are valuable tools for lifting and transferring non-ambulatory, bedridden, or bariatric residents. These advanced designs make it easier for the caregiver to assist any resident up to 450 lbs. They can lift a person from a bed, a stretcher, a wheelchair, a commode — even the floor.

The lift is made of three assemblies: the base, the mast, and the boom. The base rides on four low-friction casters mounted to the adjustable legs. Use the padded shifter handle to open and close the legs. On the 9805 lift: grab the shifter handle with one hand and the steering handle with the other, push the shifter handle to the right to release the lock pin, then turn the handle clockwise until the lock pin drops into the opposite mounting hole to fully open and lock the legs. To close, reverse the process. The lock pin must be fully down in the mounting hole — the lift is most stable when the legs are fully opened and locked.

The mast contains the hydraulic pump assembly. The boom is the lifting arm; at the end is the swivel bar, padded for safety, where the sling attaches. Raising and lowering is done using the control valve and pump handle. To raise: close the control valve (clockwise toward the pump handle) and move the handle up and down. To lower: open the control valve counterclockwise — a safety gate inside the hydraulic system controls the maximum rate of descent.

Although one sling can work for multiple residents, it is recommended that each resident be issued their own individual sling to meet their specific size, weight, medical condition, and transfer requirements. Slings generally fall into three categories: full-body (with or without commode opening), divided-leg, and toileting slings. Always check with a physician before selecting a sling. Inspect slings before every use. You can adjust slings for different body positions using color-coded loops: reclining position uses loops at the end of all four straps; seated position uses loops closest to the resident for the head and loops furthest away for the legs.

Although Invacare lifts and slings have been designed so they can be safely operated by one caregiver, it is recommended that two caregivers perform all resident transfers. Always communicate with the resident throughout the process — if you explain each step as you work through it, your resident will learn the routine and become comfortable with it.

Your Options at Checkout

The 9805P does not include a free sling. You can purchase the lift without a sling if you already own compatible Invacare slings, or add a sling and/or locking casters at checkout. Invacare slings are specifically designed for use with Invacare lifts — third-party slings are not recommended and void the warranty.

Locking Casters (Optional Upgrade)

No Locking Casters (standard)
The 9805P ships with 5” low-friction swivel casters front and rear. Rear casters do not lock on the standard model.
Pair of Locking 5” Rear Casters — Part #1110421 (+$75)
Adds locking capability to the rear casters for care settings where wheel locks are required. Lock rear casters only when positioning or removing the sling — never during lifting.

Sling

No Sling
Choose this if you already own compatible Invacare slings in the correct size for your patient.
Full Body Mesh
Supports the patient from head to thigh in open mesh fabric. A versatile everyday sling suitable for most standard transfers. Mesh construction allows air circulation and is comfortable for extended use. Available in M, L, XL.
Full Body with Commode Opening
Full-body support with an opening at the base that allows the sling to remain in place during toileting — eliminating the need to remove and reattach during bathroom transfers. Available in M, L, XL.
Divided Leg with Head Support
Separate leg sections create a more secure fit and reduce the chance of the patient sliding forward. Includes head and neck support for patients with limited cranial stability. Available in M, L, XL.

Note: Slings cannot be returned unless in original unopened packaging for hygienic reasons.

Invacare Sling Sizing Guide

Sling sizing should consider the patient’s weight, height, hip width, and body shape — not weight alone. If you are unsure which size is appropriate, call or chat with us before ordering. Always confirm sling selection with the patient’s healthcare provider. All slings must be Invacare-approved; third-party slings void the warranty.

Setup and Safety Notes

The 9805P ships in one carton at 85 lbs. Two people are recommended for unboxing and assembly. Read the owner’s manual completely before the first transfer. Do not expose the lift to extreme temperatures (above 100°F or below 32°F) or high humidity before use.

Two caregivers recommended

Although the 9805P can be operated by one caregiver, Invacare recommends that two assistants participate in all lifting preparation, transfer, and lowering procedures. Consult your healthcare provider or physical therapist before establishing a lift routine at home.

  • Do not attempt any transfer without prior approval from the patient’s physician, nurse, or medical assistant
  • Each time the mast is assembled to the base, verify the mast is locked into the socket and the locking screw is tightened before use
  • Base legs must be in the maximum open and locked position during all transfers — shifter handle must be vertical with lock pin seated in mounting hole
  • Do NOT lock the rear casters when lifting — casters must be free to roll so the lift can stabilize as the patient is raised; locking during a lift can cause tipping
  • If locking casters are installed: lock ONLY when positioning or removing the sling from around the patient
  • Lock wheelchair or commode brakes before lowering the patient into the seat
  • Do not roll the lift over raised carpet, door frames, or uneven surfaces while a patient is suspended
  • Always maneuver the lift using the steering handles on the mast — never push on the boom or patient
  • Patient’s arms should be inside the chains or straps during lifting
  • Check sling attachments every time the sling is removed and replaced before lifting
  • Use only Invacare-approved slings — third-party slings are not safe and void the warranty
  • Do not use incontinence pads or seat cushions between the patient and sling
  • Never exceed the 450 lb. weight capacity
  • This lift is for transfer only — not for transporting a patient from one location to another while suspended
  • The hydraulic pump is sealed at the factory — do not attempt to open it; service requires return to the factory
  • Inspect the swivel bar and boom mounting after the first year of use; repeat every 3 months thereafter; replace if worn

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a Hoyer lift?

Hoyer is a brand name that has become a widely used term for any full-body patient lift — similar to how Kleenex is used for tissue. The Invacare 9805P is a manual hydraulic patient lift that does everything most people mean when they say Hoyer lift: it uses a sling and spreader bar to safely lift and transfer a patient who cannot bear weight, powered by a hand pump rather than a battery.

How does the 9805P compare to the other 450 lb. manual lifts in this lineup?

The 9805P stands out in two ways: a 3-year frame warranty (compared to 1 year on most others in this lineup) and Invacare’s stated 5-year expected service life. The low-friction casters and offset mast design also reflect Invacare’s institutional engineering background. If long-term reliability and warranty coverage are priorities, the 9805P is the lift to look at closely. The optional locking casters at checkout are also unique to this model in the manual lineup.

Can this lift handle floor-level transfers — for example, after a fall?

Yes. The owner’s manual confirms floor transfer capability and includes the procedure. The boom height at the sling attachment adjusts from 17” to 61” from the floor — low enough for floor-level transfers at the bottom of that range. Confirm the floor transfer approach with the patient’s physician or physical therapist before first use.

Do I need the optional locking casters?

The standard 9805P ships with low-friction 5” swivel casters that do not lock. Rear casters should not be locked during lifting — the lift needs to be free to stabilize itself as the patient is raised. Locking casters are useful only when positioning or removing the sling from around the patient. If your care setting specifically requires locking rear casters, add the optional pair (part #1110421, +$75) at checkout.

What slings work with this lift?

The 9805P uses a six-point swivel bar that accepts 2, 4, and 6-point Invacare slings. The manual is explicit: use only Invacare-approved slings — third-party slings have not been tested by Invacare and void the warranty. Full body mesh, full body with commode opening, and divided leg with head support slings are available in M, L, and XL at checkout. If you have questions about sling sizing, call or chat with us before ordering.

Does Medicare cover this lift?

Yes. Medicare Part B covers manual hydraulic patient lifts under HCPCS code E0630 as durable medical equipment. According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (opens in new tab), coverage applies when the lift is needed for transfers between a bed and a chair, wheelchair, or commode, and the patient would be confined to bed without it. A physician’s order establishing medical necessity is required. Once your yearly deductible is met, Medicare generally covers 80% of the approved amount. ADHME does not bill Medicare directly — we provide a detailed paid invoice with the HCPCS code for you to submit. Any direct Medicare billing requires a Medicare-enrolled DMEPOS supplier.

Will private insurance or HSA/FSA cover this lift?

Many private insurers cover patient lifts when prescribed as medically necessary by a physician. ADHME doesn’t bill insurance directly, but provides a detailed paid invoice with the HCPCS code that you can submit to your private insurer for reimbursement. Contact your insurer before ordering to confirm your coverage and any required documentation. Patient lifts are also generally eligible expenses under HSA and FSA accounts — the paid invoice ADHME provides serves as your documentation.
