Which wheelchair should you buy?

It depends on what you need. First, what kinds of wheelchairs are there to choose from? 

• Electric wheelchairs, as their name implies, are easier to use because you don't have to rely on your own strength and power to get around. They are powered by a battery and controlled by a joystick. They include folding, power elevating seat, rear wheel, front wheel or mid wheel drive, flipback or removable arms.
• Transport wheelchairs, also known as travel or companion wheelchairs, require someone else to push the chair from behind. Unlike manual wheelchairs, the occupant cannot propel themselves unless they move with their feet against the ground because there are no wheels for them to push. Options include flip-back or removable arms.
• Manual wheelchairs can either be pushed by someone from behind or can be propelled by the person in the chair by means of hand rims attached to the two larger rear wheels. If you have long arms, choose smaller wheels. Shorter arms need bigger wheels. You have 4 choices: standard size, lightweight, heavy-duty, those with a reclining back. Options include flip-back or removable arms. These are the most economical wheelchair options. They do require strength though. If you don't have that, select an electric wheelchair.  

Foot and leg rests

Other things to consider when shopping for a wheelchair are footrests. You can choose between rests that support the full length of your legs or just your feet.  Foot rests are important to help you maintain proper posture in the chair. Some swing away to allow for easier entrance and exit. 

Leg rests, on the other hand, help help increase circulation, prevent swelling, and increase comfort. Leg rests are not as common on a standard wheelchairs and are most often found on reclining wheelchairs to provide additional leg support.

Arm rests - another important consideration

Arm rests come in short, full length, removable and flip-up. Our most popular type of wheelchair in any category have either flip-up or removable arms because they make access in and out of the wheelchair easier, and because you can sit at a table or desk. All wheelchair categories have removable arm choices, so pick the type you need first (see above), then use the filter to sort out removable arm wheelchairs.
