Description
The Lift That Was Engineered Around the Patient, Not Just the Caregiver.
Every patient lift in our lineup moves people safely. The Invacare Birdie™ Evo XPLUS was designed to do that with less rocking, less anxiety, and more connection between caregiver and patient. The proprietary Slow’R® integrated boom dampener reduces the swinging motion that most lifts produce — giving the patient a more stable, less alarming experience during every transfer. The curved boom and spreader bar maintain eye contact between caregiver and patient throughout the lift, so the person being transferred can see who is caring for them the entire time. These aren’t incremental improvements. They reflect a different design philosophy. At 463 lbs capacity with a power base, 40 lift cycles per charge, and a 5-year frame warranty, it’s also the most fully-featured lift in our electric patient lift lineup.

Why We Like This Lift
We like the Birdie Evo XPLUS because Invacare asked a question that most lift manufacturers don’t: what does the transfer feel like for the person being lifted? The Slow’R® dampener and the curved boom aren’t features added to a spec sheet — they’re answers to that question. For patients who are anxious about transfers, or who have had difficult experiences with rocking or losing sight of their caregiver, this lift is meaningfully different. The 5-year frame warranty and service monitoring capability tell you Invacare built it to last and built it to be maintained. It’s the lift we’d point to for a family that wants the best and has a patient whose comfort during transfers matters as much as the mechanics of getting it done.
Best for…
- Patients who experience anxiety, fear, or discomfort during transfers — the Slow’R® dampener reduces the rocking that makes lifts feel unstable
- Patients with neurological conditions, dementia, or sensory sensitivities where a calm, stable transfer environment matters
- Caregivers who want to maintain visual and emotional connection with the patient throughout every transfer
- Families investing in long-term home care equipment who want the strongest warranty and longest-lasting lift in the lineup
- High daily transfer situations where 40 cycles per charge and service monitoring reduce operational disruptions
- Caregivers who need one-hand sling attachment and pendant-controlled base for efficient solo transfers
- Settings where storage space is limited — folds tool-free for compact storage
Feature Highlights
Slow’R® Integrated Boom Dampener — Invacare’s Proprietary Answer to Rocking
When a patient is lifted in a sling, the boom arm naturally creates a pendulum effect — the patient swings and rocks, which can feel disorienting, frightening, or painful for someone with limited control over their body. The Slow’R® integrated boom dampener is a piece of hardware built into the boom that reduces this rocking movement. Invacare describes the result as a “more stable and comfortable experience for the end-user and steady lift control for the caregiver.” No other lift in our lineup has this technology. It’s the single feature that most distinguishes the Birdie Evo XPLUS from every other electric patient lift we carry.
Curved Boom and Spreader Bar — Eye Contact Throughout the Transfer
Standard patient lift booms position the spreader bar directly above the patient’s head, which can block the caregiver’s line of sight. The Birdie Evo XPLUS’s curved boom is designed specifically to allow the caregiver and patient to maintain eye contact from the moment the sling is attached to the moment the patient is lowered into their destination. For patients who are anxious, this connection is meaningful. For caregivers, it means being able to read the patient’s expression and respond in real time throughout the transfer.
Ergonomic Hook Design — One-Hand Attachment, Less Risk of Strap Slipping
The Birdie Evo XPLUS uses a redesigned sling hook with a wider slot that allows the sling loop to be attached with just one hand — keeping the other hand free for the patient. The hook’s nose is specifically shaped to prevent sling straps from sliding out unintentionally during a transfer. These are details that don’t show up on a spec sheet but matter in practice, especially for a solo caregiver managing both the patient and the lift.
Power Base — Full Pendant Control
The Birdie Evo XPLUS’s power base opens and closes the base legs from the hand pendant — no bending, no foot pedal, no shifter handle. Combined with the one-hand sling hook, this makes the Birdie Evo XPLUS one of the most genuinely solo-caregiver-friendly lifts in our lineup. Both hands are available for the patient; the pendant handles everything else.
Up to 40 Lift Cycles Per Charge — Most in Our Lineup
The Birdie Evo XPLUS delivers up to 40 full lift cycles per charge — measured from 100% to 50% battery. That’s higher than any other lift in our electric patient lift lineup. Combined with two included batteries and a remote charger, the lift is designed for high-frequency use without operational interruption.
Folds for Storage — Tool-Free
The Birdie Evo XPLUS folds to 25.3”W x 53.5”L x 18.5”H without tools — taking up minimal space when stored. The leg design features natural edges and smooth curves specifically to allow easy movement around chairs and wheelchairs when in use, and compact storage when not. This is a storage fold, not a car-trunk fold; the lift is not designed to travel the way the Protekt Take-A-Long 33400P is.
5-Year Frame Warranty / 2-Year Electronics — Strongest in Our Lineup
The Birdie Evo XPLUS carries a 5-year limited warranty on the frame and a 2-year limited warranty on electronics — the strongest warranty of any lift in our electric patient lift lineup. For a lift used multiple times daily in long-term home care, that coverage signals a manufacturer confident in the durability of what they built.
Service Monitoring Capability — Built for Long-Term Reliability
The Birdie Evo XPLUS includes service monitoring capability, which allows a technician to read the lift’s usage history and identify maintenance needs before they become failures. This feature is more commonly found in institutional and facility lifts than in home-care equipment. For families making a long-term investment in this lift, it’s a meaningful indicator of how Invacare designed it — to be maintained and serviced, not just replaced.
Your Options at Checkout
Sling (Choose One, or Order the Lift Only)
The Birdie Evo XPLUS works with Invacare slings specifically designed for this lift. You can purchase the lift without a sling if you already own compatible Invacare slings, or add one at checkout:
Which Sling Should You Buy?
| Patient need | Recommended sling type |
|---|---|
| General transfers | Full-body sling |
| Showering or bathing | Full-body mesh sling |
| Toileting transfers | Full-body commode sling |
| Limited head or neck control | Divided-leg sling with head support |
Invacare Sling Sizing Guide
Weight is a helpful starting point, but sling selection should also consider the patient’s height, body shape, hip width, posture, and support needs. Always consult your healthcare provider if you are unsure which sling size is appropriate.
| Sling size | Approximate patient weight |
|---|---|
| Small | Up to 100 lbs |
| Medium | 100–200 lbs |
| Large | 200–300 lbs |
| X-Large | 300–500 lbs |
Not every Invacare sling style is available in every size. Check the sling options in the add-to-cart section for the sizes available with this lift. If you’re not sure which size to choose, call or chat with us before ordering. All slings must be Invacare-approved; third-party slings void the warranty.
RS300 Electronic Patient Scale (Optional)
The Invacare RS300 electronic patient scale attaches between the spreader bar and sling and displays the patient’s weight during each lift. For patients where weight monitoring is part of a care plan, this eliminates the need for a separate weigh-in. Item #BLS5.
Setup and Safety Notes
The Birdie Evo XPLUS assembles without tools. Read the owner’s manual completely before the first transfer — particularly the sling attachment instructions, which use Invacare’s color-coded loop system for positioning.
- Do not attempt any transfer without approval from the patient’s physician, nurse, or medical assistant
- Base legs must be fully open and locked before lifting the patient
- Keep rear casters unlocked during all lifting procedures — allows the lift to stabilize itself as the patient is raised
- Keep hands and fingers clear of all moving parts at all times
- Check sling attachments and hook placement before every lift — verify sling loops are correctly seated in the hooks
- Use only Invacare-approved slings designed for this lift — third-party slings void the warranty
- Never exceed the 463 lb weight limit
- This lift is for transfer only — not for transporting a patient from one location to another while suspended
- Emergency stop button on the control unit locks out the hand pendant; rotate to restore power
- Emergency lifting and lowering controls are available on the control unit in case of power failure
- Service monitoring capability allows a technician to track usage history — schedule regular maintenance per the owner’s manual to preserve the warranty
Invacare recommends that all lifting procedures be observed by a trained professional first and practiced with supervision before transferring a real patient. Consult your healthcare provider or physical therapist before establishing a lift routine at home.
Pair It With
- Additional Invacare patient lift slings — full body, divided leg, and commode-opening styles in multiple sizes
- Hospital bed — adjustable height simplifies positioning the lift and reduces caregiver strain during setup
- Commode chair — pairs naturally with the commode-opening sling for bathroom transfers
This lift was designed specifically to reduce the rocking that makes transfers feel unsteady — so it will feel smoother than you might expect. And because of the way the arm is curved, I’ll be able to see your face the whole time. You won’t lose sight of me. We’ll go slowly, and you can tell me how it feels as we go.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a Hoyer lift?
Hoyer is a brand name that has become a widely used term for any full-body electric patient lift — similar to how Kleenex is used for tissue. The Invacare Birdie Evo XPLUS is a battery-powered electric patient lift that does everything most people mean when they say Hoyer lift — and then goes further, with the Slow’R® integrated boom dampener, curved boom for caregiver-patient eye contact, and ergonomic hook design that no standard Hoyer-style lift includes.
What makes the Slow’R® dampener different from a standard lift?
When a patient is suspended in a sling, the boom arm creates a natural pendulum effect — the patient rocks and swings as the lift moves. On a standard lift, there’s nothing to counteract this motion. The Slow’R® dampener is hardware built into the Birdie Evo XPLUS’s boom that actively reduces this rocking movement. The result is a smoother, more controlled transfer experience for the patient and steadier lift control for the caregiver. It’s proprietary to Invacare and not available on any other lift in our lineup.
How does this compare to the Invacare Reliant RPL450-2?
Both are Invacare battery-powered electric patient lifts with power bases and pendant control of both boom and base. The key differences: the Birdie Evo XPLUS has the Slow’R® boom dampener, curved boom for eye contact, ergonomic hook, service monitoring, folding capability, 40 lift cycles per charge, and a 5-year frame warranty. The RPL450-2 has total pinch-point protection covering all moving parts, an 8-year expected service life, and a 450 lb capacity — slightly less than the Birdie’s 463 lbs. They serve different buyers: the Birdie Evo XPLUS is for families prioritizing patient comfort and experience during transfers; the RPL450-2 is for families prioritizing comprehensive safety protection across every moving part.
Will insurance cover this lift?
Medicare covers manual hydraulic patient lifts as durable medical equipment, but not electric lifts. If you’re set on an electric lift, there’s a path worth knowing about: Medicare may reimburse you for what it would have paid toward a comparable manual lift, and you pay the difference. Any Medicare benefit requires the purchase to go through a Medicare-enrolled DMEPOS supplier — which ADHME is not. If maximizing your Medicare benefit is the priority, we’d recommend going that route instead.
Private insurance: Many private insurers cover electric patient lifts when prescribed as medically necessary by a physician. ADHME doesn’t bill insurance directly, but provides a detailed paid invoice with the HCPCS code that you can submit to your private insurer for reimbursement. Contact your insurer before ordering to confirm your coverage and any required documentation.
HSA and FSA: Patient lifts are generally eligible expenses under Health Savings Accounts and Flexible Spending Accounts. The paid invoice ADHME provides serves as your documentation for reimbursement.
Use HCPCS Code E0635 when submitting to your private insurer for reimbursement.
