The Electric Patient Lift That Goes Where You Go

Most patient lifts are built to stay put. The Protekt® Take-A-Long (Model 33400P) by Proactive Medical was built to go. It folds flat and fits in most car trunks — making it one of the few lifts in our electric patient lift lineup designed to travel with you. At 87.3 lbs with a folded height of just 15.8”, it goes where other lifts can’t.

At a Glance

400 lb weight capacity
Folds to fit in most car trunks — one of the few lifts in our lineup that travels with you
Battery-powered electric lift — hand pendant controls up and down, no pumping
Lifting height 18.5” to 67.2” — lower than most lifts in this category; may allow sling positioning in some floor-level situations with assistance.
Lightweight at 87.3 lbs — lighter than most full-size lifts
Tool-free fold and unfold — no tools, no separate assembly steps
Folded dimensions: 48”L x 26”W x 15.8”H — fits in a closet, under a bed, or in a trunk
Built-in battery gauge — always know your charge level
3-year frame warranty — matching the best frame coverage in the Proactive lineup
Not compatible with 6-point slings — Only works with 2- and 4-point slings. If 6-point sling compatibility matters, see the Protekt Transformer 33400HE
Manual foot-pedal base — legs open by stepping on a lever, not from the hand pendant. If the caregiver has limited mobility, back or knee issues, or is doing many transfers daily, a pendant-controlled base may be easier — see the Protekt 500 33500

Why We Like This Patient Lift

We like the Take-A-Long because it solves a problem no other lift in our lineup addresses: what do you do when the person you’re caring for needs a lift at home and somewhere else? Visiting family, a second home, a rehab facility transition, an apartment with no storage — the Take-A-Long handles all of it.

At 87.3 lbs with a folded height of just 15.8”, it fits where other lifts don’t.

The trade-off is the 2-point spreader bar, which limits sling compatibility compared to the 6-point bar on the Transformer — you won't be able to use 6-point slings. For families where portability is the priority, that's worth it.

We also like that with a minimum lifting height of just 18.5", the Protekt Take-A-Long is better suited for floor recovery situations than many compact patient lifts.

Best for…

Families who travel with a loved one who needs full-body lift assistance
Caregivers who work in multiple homes and need one lift that moves with them
Small apartments or homes where storage space is limited
Patients transitioning from a facility to home care who need a lift right away
Backup lift for households that already have a full-size lift at home
Patients who cannot bear weight during transfers and need full-body support

Feature Highlights

Folds to Fit in Most Car Trunks — Genuinely Portable

When folded, the Take-A-Long measures 48”L x 26”W x 15.8”H with the battery attached — compact enough to fit in the trunk of most sedans and SUVs. No other lift in our lineup can do this. For families managing care across two locations, or professional aides who work in multiple homes, this changes what’s possible.

87.3 lbs — Light Enough to Actually Move

Most full-size electric patient lifts weigh 100–130 lbs. At 87.3 lbs, the Take-A-Long is light enough for one caregiver to load into a vehicle and move between locations without assistance. It’s still a substantial piece of equipment — this isn’t a lift you’ll carry under one arm — but the weight difference is meaningful when you’re moving it regularly.

Battery-Powered Electric Motor — No Pumping Required

The Take-A-Long is a fully electric lift. A rechargeable battery powers the boom arm up and down via a hand pendant — no hydraulic pumping, no physical effort to raise or lower. The built-in battery gauge shows your charge level at all times, and a low battery alarm sounds before the battery is critically low. An emergency stop button is included, and a manual lowering device at the top of the actuator shaft allows safe patient lowering if the power fails mid-transfer.

18.5” Minimum Lifting Height — Low Enough for Floor Transfers

The Take-A-Long has a lifting range of 18.5” to 67.2” at the sling hook-up. With a minimum lifting height of just 18.5", the Protekt Take-A-Long is better suited for floor recovery situations than many compact patient lifts. The lower hook-up height allows the spreader bar to get closer to the patient, making it easier to connect the sling when lifting from the floor. See this video for training on how to get someone off the floor.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnE0Yz53wCY

2-Point Spreader Bar — The Trade-Off Worth Understanding

To achieve its folding design, the Take-A-Long uses a 2-point spreader bar rather than the 6-point bar found on the Transformer 33400HE. The 2-point bar is compatible with 2-point and 4-point slings, which covers the majority of common sling styles including full body, divided leg, mesh bathing, and commode-opening slings. It is not compatible with 6-point slings. If you already own 6-point slings or know your care situation requires them, the Transformer is the better fit. If you’re starting fresh with slings, the options available for this lift cover most home care transfer needs.

3-Year Frame Warranty — Strongest in the Proactive Lineup

The Take-A-Long carries a 3-year limited warranty on the frame, 2 years on electronics, and 1 year on the battery — verified from the Proactive Medical spec sheet. The 3-year frame warranty and 2-year electronics coverage are both stronger than the comparable terms on the Transformer 33400HE.

VIDEO TRANSCRIPTION Protekt Take-A-Long Folding Lift

Hey folks this is Damian here representing proactive medical
I'm here to show you how to use the Pro-Tech 400 pound Take Along patient lift starting with the base and working our way up you can see that the unit rolls around on four casters the back casters can lock by pressing the red tab in the gray tab unlocks them the only time you would lock the casters on this device if you were lifting a patient from the floor or if you're lifting from an uneven surface the base opens and closes with the foot pedal on the back of the device

(00:37) it's completely safe to use the product with the base open or closed the system is completely electronic so we can raise and lower the device by the up button on the remote to take it up and the down button to lower it if something stopped working on the remote or a quit functioning with the remote we have an auxiliary set of up and down buttons on the control box that allow us to raise and lower the device as well the system goes up and down with an electric actuator that's located here in the front so we can see as we're raising

(01:12) the device if the unit ever completely failed and we couldn't make it go up and down at all electronically we can always lower the unit down by pulling down on the red knob and turning it to lower it manually at the very end of the device is the spreader bar the spreader bar is where we're going to connect all the slings when we make the transfers with the patient this system is completely foldable so we can break this down into a small package to put it underneath a bed or put it in a car let me show you how to take it apart so

(01:45) you can see how to transport the device now let's see how we take apart and fold up the Take Along 400 pound patient lift our first step is to remove the pin that connects the actuator to the Boom then we're going to place the actuator into the receiver now we're going to lower the boom and place the spreader bar in the Cradle now we're going to insert the pin back into both holes in our last step is to remove the pin at the bottom lean the unit forward and insert the pin back into the bottom now the system is folded up

(02:31) and able to be transported to where we want to store it okay folks now I'm going to show you how to hook up the full body mesh sling or any of the full body slings in our range to the Pro Tech Take Along lifter so we're going to take the lift and open up our base approach the patient with the spreader bar we're going to connect the shoulder connectors to the hooks and the leg connectors to the hooks we're going to do the same on the other side hit the up button pay attention to those hooks make sure the loops are in the

(03:20) proper place and now we're going to gently raise the patient out of the chair we're going to make sure and pay attention to our Loops hooks make sure everything's connected safely and properly and now we've made the transfer with the protect take a long lift

Your Options at Checkout

Sling (Choose One, or Order the Lift Only)

You can purchase the lift without a sling if you already own compatible 2- or 4-point slings, or bundle it with one of these:

No Sling
Choose this if you already have Proactive Medical-compatible 2- or 4-point slings in the right size.
Full Body Sling with Commode Opening
Supports the patient from head to thigh with an opening at the base so the sling can stay in place during toileting. Good choice if commode transfers are part of the daily routine.
Full Body Mesh Bathing Sling
Open mesh construction drains water and dries quickly, making it appropriate for shower or tub transfers.

Note: Slings cannot be returned unless in original unopened packaging for hygienic reasons.

Which Sling Should You Buy?

Patient needRecommended sling type
General transfers Full-body sling
Showering or bathing Full-body mesh sling
Toileting transfers Full-body commode sling
Easier wheelchair transfers Divided-leg or U-style sling
Limited head or neck control Padded sling with head support

Patient sling sizing guide

Choosing the right sling size depends on the patient’s weight, height, body shape, posture, and support needs. The chart below provides general manufacturer sizing guidelines, but it should not replace professional guidance when patient safety or fit is uncertain.

Some sling styles may not be available in every size. For example, a Small size may be available in certain Proactive Medical sling styles but not in the specific sling options offered with this lift. Please check the options in the add-to-cart section to see which sling sizes are available for this model.

Sling sizeApprox. patient weightApprox. patient height
Small 75–150 lbs 59"–64"
Medium 125–200 lbs 63"–68"
Large 175–300 lbs 67"–72"
Extra Large 275–500 lbs 71"–76"
XXL 350–600 lbs Determined as needed

Because weight ranges overlap, the best size is not always obvious from weight alone. A taller, slimmer patient and a shorter, broader patient may need different sling sizes even if they weigh about the same. When in doubt, choose the sling based on the patient’s full body measurements and the type of support needed.

If you’re not sure which size to choose, call or chat with us before ordering — proper fit is important for both safety and comfort.

Digital Scale (Optional)

Attaches between the spreader bar and sling and displays the patient’s weight during each lift. The scale measures up to 600 lbs and is useful when a care plan requires regular weight monitoring — no separate weigh-in needed.

Battery and Charger Kit (Optional)

Includes one Protekt battery pack and one external battery charger cradle with power cord. Lets you charge one battery while using the other — eliminating downtime between transfers. Especially useful when the lift is in heavy daily use or when traveling away from a reliable power source.

Setup and Safety Notes

The Take-A-Long patient lift ships in one box and folds open without tools. Most caregivers are up and running in under 20 minutes the first time. Once the routine is familiar, setup takes only a few minutes.

Lock the rear casters when lifting from the floor or an uneven surface — keep them unlocked during all standard transfers so the lift can naturally adjust as the patient’s weight shifts
Keep the base in the widest position during all lifting and lowering
Close the base before moving the lift between locations
Check the sling for wear before each use — replace if fabric is fraying or loops show stress
Use only Proactive Medical-compatible slings — third-party slings void the warranty and create injury risk
Never exceed the 400 lb weight limit
If the actuator fails while a patient is suspended, use the emergency lowering device at the top of the actuator shaft — turn the collar ring clockwise to lower safely
Before you begin

We recommend consulting with your healthcare provider or physical therapist before establishing a patient lift routine at home.

Pair It With

Compatible patient lift slings — Additional 2- and 4-point slings in full body, divided leg, and mesh bathing styles
Commode chair — Pairs naturally with the commode-opening sling for bathroom transfers
For the caregiver What to tell your loved one

It might look different from a standard lift — smaller, lighter — but it works exactly the same way and is built to the same safety standards. The fact that it folds doesn’t mean it’s less sturdy. It means we can bring it with us, so you don’t have to stay home when the family gets together.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Take-a-Long patient lift compare to the Protekt Transformer 33400HE?

Both lifts have 400 lb capacity and battery-powered electric operation. The key difference is form factor. The Take-A-Long folds to fit in most car trunks and weighs 87.3 lbs — built for portability and storage. The Transformer doesn’t fold, weighs slightly more, and has a 6-point spreader bar vs. this lift’s 2-point bar — meaning the Transformer works with more sling types. If the lift will live in one room and travel isn’t a factor, the Transformer is better equipped. If portability or storage space is the priority, the Take-A-Long is the right call.

What slings work with the 2-point spreader bar?

The 2-point spreader bar is compatible with 2-point and 4-point slings — which covers most common full body, divided leg, mesh, and commode-opening sling styles. It is not compatible with 6-point slings. All sling options available at checkout for this lift are compatible with the 2-point bar. If you have existing slings you want to use, confirm they are 2-point or 4-point before ordering.

What are the folded dimensions, and can it be transported in a rear-entry wheelchair van?

When folded, the Take-A-Long measures 48”L x 26”W x 15.8”H and weighs 87.3 lbs. Whether it fits in a specific rear-entry wheelchair van depends on the available cargo space once the wheelchair is loaded. Many families successfully transport it in SUVs and vans, but we recommend measuring your available cargo area before ordering. Call us at 1-800-956-6616 if you want to talk through your specific vehicle situation — we’re happy to help you figure it out before you buy.

Will Medicare pay for this patient lift?

Medicare covers manual hydraulic patient lifts as durable medical equipment, but not electric lifts. If you're set on an electric lift, there's a path worth knowing about: Medicare may reimburse you for what it would have paid toward a comparable manual lift, and you pay the difference. The catch is that any Medicare benefit requires the purchase to go through a Medicare-enrolled DMEPOS supplier — which ADHME is not. If maximizing your Medicare benefit is the priority, we'd recommend going that route instead.

Private insurance: Many private insurers cover electric patient lifts when prescribed as medically necessary by a physician. ADHME doesn't bill insurance directly, but provides a detailed paid invoice with the HCPCS code that you can submit to your private insurer for reimbursement. Contact your insurer before ordering to confirm your coverage and any required documentation.

HSA and FSA: Patient lifts are generally eligible expenses under Health Savings Accounts and Flexible Spending Accounts. The paid invoice ADHME provides serves as your documentation for reimbursement.

Use HCPCS Code E0635 when when submitting to your private insurer for reimbursement.
