So what is a lift chair? 

A lift chair is a specialized type of seating that is designed to assist individuals who are bedridden and struggle with sitting down and standing up positions. It looks and functions like a regular recliner but has a built-in lifting mechanism that tilts the chair forward and raises the seat to help the user stand up.

Lift chairs come in a variety of styles and sizes, ranging from small to large, and can be upholstered in various materials, including fabric, leather, and vinyl. Some models have additional features like massage or heat, while others offer specialized positioning options like zero gravity or Twilight technology which we’ll get into below.

Lift chairs are typically powered by electricity and can be operated using a remote control. The user can adjust the chair's position to their liking, recline back for relaxation, and easily transition to a standing position when they need to get up.

And while it needs to be said how they help the user stand up, anyone – handicapped or not– would enjoy the comfort they bring. 

Who are lift chairs ideal for?

These are recliners after all, so just what kind of reclining positions do they provide? It depends on the make and the model, but in general lift chairs offer a variety of reclining options to provide maximum comfort and customization to users. Here are some of the reclining options available:

1. Zero Gravity:
   This position elevates the legs above the heart, reducing pressure on the lower back and improving circulation.
2. Twilight™ Position (a Golden exclusive)
   The Twilight position available in lift chairs is a unique reclining posture that involves raising the feet above the heart and slightly elevating the head, mimicking the body's position when standing upright
3. Trendelenburg:
   This position raises the feet above the heart and the head below the feet, promoting relaxation and reducing swelling in the legs.
4. TV Watching:
   This is ideal for watching television or reading, with a slight recline that supports the head and neck while allowing you to remain engaged with your surroundings.
5. Sleep:
   This reclining option offers a full recline that supports the entire body, making it easier to sleep in the chair.

These reclining options can be adjusted using a hand control, which allows you to easily find the perfect position for your comfort and relaxation. Golden chairs have a programmable hand control so that after you find your perfect position, you can save it!

Golden's 5-zone system of comfort 

Golden's five-zone system for comfort divides the chair into five distinct zones, each of which can be adjusted independently to provide optimal comfort and support for the user's body. All 5 zones are not available on all chairs. They may have 1, 2, 4 or 5. When choosing your lift chair, it's important to consider your own specific needs and preferences, as well as your budget, and choose accordingly.

1. Lower Body Zone: 
This zone includes the footrest and leg rest, and it provides support and comfort for the patient’s lower body.

2. Upper Body Zone: 
This zone has the backrest and armrests that can be adjusted according to the comfort of the patient’s upper body. By providing adjustable support for your back and shoulders, the separate movement of the backrest enables the release of stress and strain from your upper body. 

3. Headrest Zone: 
This zone deals with the headrest. When the adjustable headrest moves upward, it provides support for the placement of your head and encourages the natural shape of your spine, which helps to release tension from your neck and shoulders.

4. Lumbar Zone: 
This zone has lumbar support which gives support to the patient’s lower back.The adjustable lumbar provides personalized and sturdy support, which can alleviate pressure from your spine, allowing your back muscles to rest and revitalize.

5. Twilight Tilt Zone: 
This zone includes the seat and backrest, and it can be adjusted to provide a deeper recline than traditional lift chairs. With the patented Twilight Technology, the tilting motion of a recliner creates a sensation of weightlessness and provides additional positioning options that are not found in other traditional recliners. Encourage circulation by relaxing with your legs elevated or promote the release of muscle tension and joint pain in a comforting neutral position.

Golden's chairs are labeled as 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 zone. 

Additional options add to your comfort

The single Vive Health chair we carry comes with massage, but you can add heat and massage to most of Golden's chairs for an additional fee. You can also add a foot rest extension and on some models articulating headrest and lumbar support. And for those who need extra help standing up, Golden provides the option to add straight up lift. There are multiple fabric types and colors to choose from

The following are short descriptions of the available upholstery options. You can see more details and photos on the individual chair pages.  Most Golden lift chairs have the option to special order in any of their available premium fabrics and faux leathers for an additional fee.

Most of the colors fall in the tan, browns and gray families. If you're looking for something in the reds and blues, check out "Easy Living" and "Anli." "Brisa" also has beet and navy blue options.

Sutton faux leather is a rich and modern alternative to natural leather that is extremely comfortable while offering the rugged durability of leather. Made from 100% polyester, the fabric is easy to care for ensuring functionality as well as elegance. This long-lasting fabric will compliment a variety of décors while standing the test of time under heavy use. 

Sutton comes standard on the Dione and Titan models. Premium special order fabrics are not available.

The Anli™ urethane fabric is highly durable and provides the most realistic imitation of leather. The composite material and polyurethane coating make this fabric water resistant, flexible and lightweight. Unlike vinyl, there is no cracking or peeling. It remains soft and supple.

Anli™ is available as a premium special order for all but Elara, Dione & Titan models.

BRISA™ ULTRAFABRIC by Golden

Supple Brisa® fabrics offer the refined look of soft and luxurious faux leather, polyurethane fabric and designed with a unique ventilation system that enables it to breathe, keeping you cool and comfortable.  It will never stick to you or feel too hot or too cold.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose a lift chair? 

Here are things to consider when picking out a lift chair: 

Fit: The larger the chair, the deeper the seat cushion. Choose a chair that's too big and your legs may not touch the floor when sitting straight up. Choose a model that's too small and your lower back area might not respond well.

Number of Positions: Infinite position lift chairs have two motors that allow the footrest to move independently of the backrest. This feature is useful for individuals who want to sit upright while also elevating the footrest. In contrast, 2-position and 3-position lift chairs only have one motor, so the backrest must recline in order for the footrest to be extended. Additionally, 3-position lift chairs can fully recline, while 2-position chairs can only recline to 45 degrees.

Living Area: Does your lift chair need to be against a wall? Models are available that can start against a wall and slide open forward without banging into the wall behind it. Standard models both slide out and backwards which may be a problem in tight areas.

Does Medicare pay for lift chairs? 

If you qualify, Medicare will pay 80% of the cost of the motorized lift chair. You'll pay your Part B annual deductible, the remaining 20% for the device and the cost of the chair itself. The total amount you pay can depend on any other insurance you have, where you get the lift chair and more.

Are lift chairs tax deductible?

Yes, in many cases lift chairs can be considered a medical necessity and are therefore a a tax deductible write-off..

How much is shipping?
Shipping is free in the Continental USA for all lift chairs and other products. Please contact us if you require shipping to Alaska or Hawaii.

What if I don't like it? What is your return policy?
Some products by law cannot be returned for hygienic reasons. For all others, like these lift chairs, we offer a 30-day return policy on most products. Damaged product may be returned and exchanged at no cost to you. All others will be shipped at the customer’s expense to the least costly location. A 15-20% restocking fee will also apply depending on the item. See our Policy page for more information.

You said you will match price of a lift chair if I found a cheaper price elsewhere. What do I need to do to get that low price?

First though, we like to advise customers that there may be hidden costs at other shopping sites such as shipping or tax. Or perhaps what you're looking at may not include options we include. Be sure you are comparing apples to oranges!

Do you bill Medicare?
In order to keep our costs down and offer greatly reduced prices, ADHME does not bill any insurance company. However, for certain products that Medicare may partially reimburse on a purchase (i.e., commodes, lift chairs, walkers and rollators), we do provide a detailed paid invoice which will include any product HCPCS billing codes. We suggest checking with your private insurance company about possible reimbursement from them with your paid receipt.
