We like the Take-A-Long because it solves a problem no other lift in our lineup addresses: what do you do when the person you’re caring for needs a lift at home and somewhere else? Visiting family, a second home, a rehab facility transition, an apartment with no storage — the Take-A-Long handles all of it.

The trade-off is the 2-point spreader bar, which limits sling compatibility compared to the 6-point bar on the Transformer — you won't be able to use 6-point slings. For families where portability is the priority, that's worth it.

Most full-size electric patient lifts weigh 100–130 lbs. At 87.3 lbs, the Take-A-Long is light enough for one caregiver to load into a vehicle and move between locations without assistance. It’s still a substantial piece of equipment — this isn’t a lift you’ll carry under one arm — but the weight difference is meaningful when you’re moving it regularly.

Battery-Powered Electric Motor — No Pumping Required

The Take-A-Long is a fully electric lift. A rechargeable battery powers the boom arm up and down via a hand pendant — no hydraulic pumping, no physical effort to raise or lower. The built-in battery gauge shows your charge level at all times, and a low battery alarm sounds before the battery is critically low. An emergency stop button is included, and a manual lowering device at the top of the actuator shaft allows safe patient lowering if the power fails mid-transfer.

18.5” Minimum Lifting Height — Low Enough for Floor Transfers

The Take-A-Long has a lifting range of 18.5” to 67.2” at the sling hook-up. With a minimum lifting height of just 18.5", the Protekt Take-A-Long is better suited for floor recovery situations than many compact patient lifts. The lower hook-up height allows the spreader bar to get closer to the patient, making it easier to connect the sling when lifting from the floor. 2-Point Spreader Bar — The Trade-Off Worth Understanding

To achieve its folding design, the Take-A-Long uses a 2-point spreader bar rather than the 6-point bar found on the Transformer 33400HE. The 2-point bar is compatible with 2-point and 4-point slings, which covers the majority of common sling styles including full body, divided leg, mesh bathing, and commode-opening slings. It is not compatible with 6-point slings. If you already own 6-point slings or know your care situation requires them, the Transformer is the better fit. If you’re starting fresh with slings, the options available for this lift cover most home care transfer needs.

3-Year Frame Warranty — Strongest in the Proactive Lineup

The Take-A-Long carries a 3-year limited warranty on the frame, 2 years on electronics, and 1 year on the battery — verified from the Proactive Medical spec sheet. The 3-year frame warranty and 2-year electronics coverage are both stronger than the comparable terms on the Transformer 33400HE.

Full Body Sling with Commode Opening

Supports the patient from head to thigh with an opening at the base so the sling can stay in place during toileting. Good choice if commode transfers are part of the daily routine.

Open mesh construction drains water and dries quickly, making it appropriate for shower or tub transfers.

Which Sling Should You Buy?

Choosing the right sling size depends on the patient’s weight, height, body shape, posture, and support needs. The chart below provides general manufacturer sizing guidelines, but it should not replace professional guidance when patient safety or fit is uncertain.

Some sling styles may not be available in every size. For example, a Small size may be available in certain Proactive Medical sling styles but not in the specific sling options offered with this lift. Please check the options in the add-to-cart section to see which sling sizes are available for this model.

Because weight ranges overlap, the best size is not always obvious from weight alone. A taller, slimmer patient and a shorter, broader patient may need different sling sizes even if they weigh about the same. When in doubt, choose the sling based on the patient’s full body measurements and the type of support needed.

Digital Scale (Optional)

Attaches between the spreader bar and sling and displays the patient’s weight during each lift. The scale measures up to 600 lbs and is useful when a care plan requires regular weight monitoring — no separate weigh-in needed.

Battery and Charger Kit (Optional)

Includes one Protekt battery pack and one external battery charger cradle with power cord. Lets you charge one battery while using the other — eliminating downtime between transfers. Especially useful when the lift is in heavy daily use or when traveling away from a reliable power source.

Setup and Safety Notes

The Take-A-Long patient lift ships in one box and folds open without tools. Most caregivers are up and running in under 20 minutes the first time. Once the routine is familiar, setup takes only a few minutes.

Will Medicare pay for this patient lift?

Medicare covers manual hydraulic patient lifts as durable medical equipment, but not electric lifts. If you're set on an electric lift, there's a path worth knowing about: Medicare may reimburse you for what it would have paid toward a comparable manual lift, and you pay the difference. The catch is that any Medicare benefit requires the purchase to go through a Medicare-enrolled DMEPOS supplier — which ADHME is not. If maximizing your Medicare benefit is the priority, we'd recommend going that route instead.

Private insurance: Many private insurers cover electric patient lifts when prescribed as medically necessary by a physician. ADHME doesn't bill insurance directly, but provides a detailed paid invoice with the HCPCS code that you can submit to your private insurer for reimbursement. Contact your insurer before ordering to confirm your coverage and any required documentation.
