What is a standard wheelchair?

A standard wheelchair is a manually operated folding chair with a steel frame, large rear wheels with hand rims for self-propulsion, and swing-away footrests. "Standard" refers to the weight class — these chairs weigh more than 35 lbs. without footrests — as distinct from lightweight and ultra-lightweight models. They are the most durable and economical category of manual wheelchair and are available in the widest range of seat sizes and arm configurations.

All of the manual wheelchairs can be pushed by a caregiver or self-propelled using the hand rims on the rear wheels.

What doorway width do I need for a wheelchair?

ADA guidelines recommend a minimum clear doorway width of 32". A 16" seat wheelchair has an overall width of approximately 24", an 18" seat chair runs about 25"–26", and a 20" seat chair runs about 28". A standard 32"–36" interior doorway will accommodate all three. Narrow doorways under 30" may require a narrower transport wheelchair or a slimline manual model. How do I choose the right seat width?

Measure the user's hip width at the widest point while seated. Add 1"–2" for comfort — that's your target seat width. Too narrow causes pressure and discomfort; too wide makes self-propulsion harder and increases the chair's overall footprint. Most adults fit an 18" seat. An 18" seat is the most widely stocked size and offers the most model choices.

What seat height should I choose?

Standard axle position puts the seat at 19.5" from the floor — appropriate for most adults. Hemi (low) axle positions drop the seat to 17.5", which is ideal for shorter users or those who use one or both feet to propel the chair. Several models on this page offer dual-axle frames so you can set the height at purchase. Look for "dual axle" in the product description if this matters for your user.

Fixed arms vs. removable arms — which is better?

Fixed full-length arms provide slightly more lateral support and are often more durable, but they make side transfers (getting in and out from the side) difficult or impossible. Removable arms — whether desk-length or full-length — swing away or detach completely, making transfers from a bed, toilet, or car seat much easier. Desk-length arms are cut shorter at the front so the chair can be pulled closer to a table. If the user will be doing their own transfers or sitting at a desk regularly, removable desk-length arms are the right choice.

What is the difference between a standard and a lightweight wheelchair?

Standard wheelchairs use heavier-gauge steel frames and weigh more than 35 lbs. without footrests. They are typically more affordable and more durable under heavy daily use. Lightweight wheelchairs use aluminum frames and weigh 19–34 lbs., making them easier to lift into a car and more practical for users who transport the chair frequently. If the chair will primarily be used at home and cost is a priority, a standard model is a solid choice. If the user or caregiver will be loading it into a vehicle regularly, consider our lightweight wheelchair category.

Do these wheelchairs work for bariatric users?

Standard wheelchairs support up to 350 lbs. If the user's weight exceeds 350 lbs., standard models are not appropriate. We carry a full selection of bariatric wheelchairs with weight capacities up to 700 lbs. and wider seat options starting at 22".

What if the user cannot self-propel?

Standard wheelchairs with large rear wheels can be self-propelled or pushed by a caregiver. If the user will always be pushed by someone else and never self-propel, a transport wheelchair may be a better fit — they are lighter, easier to push, and more compact, though they cannot be self-propelled. What is included with each wheelchair?

All wheelchairs in this category ship with swing-away, removable footrests. Armrests are included per the model's configuration (fixed or removable). Anti-tipping devices are included on most models. Seat cushions are not included — if pressure relief is a concern, we carry a range of wheelchair seat cushions compatible with standard frames.

Do these wheelchairs come with a warranty?

Most standard wheelchairs carry a manufacturer's warranty of at least one year on parts, with many offering 3-year frame warranties (Proactive, Drive Medical, Invacare, and Everest & Jennings models on this page include 3-year frame coverage). Warranty specifics are listed on each product page.

Can I get insurance reimbursement for a manual wheelchair?

We do not bill insurance directly. However, we provide a detailed invoice with the applicable HCPCS code (K0001 for standard manual wheelchairs) that you can submit to your private insurance carrier for reimbursement. Medicare coverage for wheelchairs requires purchase through a Medicare-enrolled DMEPOS supplier — we are not a Medicare supplier.
