What Is a Power Base?

The power base is the lower part of an electric Hoyer lift—the part with the wheels that sits on the floor. It’s called the “power” base because it contains the motor and controls that let you open or close the legs of the lift automatically, using a button.

Why is that important?

• When you’re moving a person in and out of a wheelchair, bed, or toilet, the legs of the lift sometimes need to be wider or narrower to fit around things safely.

• With a manual base, you have to open and close the legs by hand, usually with a lever or foot pedal.

• With a power base, you just press a button, and the motor does the work for you—making transfers easier and safer for both the caregiver and the patient.

Does Medicare Cover Electric Hoyer Lifts? 

Medicare Part B may cover a manual hoyer lift as durable medical equipment (DME) with a doctor's prescription, but it does not cover electric hoyer lifts. Electric models are considered convenience items and must be paid for out-of-pocket.

Good news is, since Medicare will pay for a manual hoyer lift, you only need to pay the difference if you want to upgrade to an electric hoyer lift.
